In a significant move, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Ukraine will offer citizenship to foreign volunteers serving in the country’s Defense Forces and their families. This announcement, made through a post on Telegram on August 15, underscores the nation’s commitment to acknowledging and supporting those who contribute to its defense efforts.
President Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude and support for these volunteers, often referred to as “Ukrainian legionnaires,” who are citizens of other countries but have joined Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty. “Every warrior who defends the Ukrainian state, protects our people, and defends our independence deserves recognition and maximum support,” Zelenskyy stated.
Highlighting the significance of this gesture, the President also extended the offer of citizenship to the families of these volunteers, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging their sacrifice and contribution. “They deserve to be our citizens, citizens of Ukraine. It is also fair to extend this to their families, to the families of our heroes,” he added.
This policy aims to strengthen the bond between Ukraine and those who have shown unwavering support and bravery in the face of conflict, further integrating them into the fabric of Ukrainian society.
